IRA-Eligible Metals: Purity, Coin Exceptions and Custody

IRA metal eligibility requires more than a dealer’s “approved” label. Section 408(m) provides specifically enumerated coin exceptions and a bullion exception tied to contract-market minimum fineness and trustee physical possession. The standard gold-bullion minimum is 0.995, not 0.9995; custody and exact product acceptance are separate checks.51, 64

Palladium0.999599.95%CME NYMEX chapter 106

The gold/silver minimums come from the current contract rules read with section 408(m); platinum and palladium have their own CME chapters. Sources were reviewed October 12, 2026. These figures do not alone certify every retail product or every custodian’s acceptance.64, 65, 51

Platinum/palladium minimums are documented separately in the platinum contract chapter and palladium chapter. Do not apply their 0.9995 standard to all gold.66, 67

Statutory Coins Are a Separate Route

Section 408(m)(3)(A) specifies certain coins minted under the cited U.S. provisions and certain state-issued coins. The enumerated gold-coin exception is why a permitted coin need not be judged solely by the bullion 0.995 threshold. That statutory exception does not turn every low-fineness coin or graded collectible into an accepted IRA asset.51

Have the trustee identify the exact exception or bullion acceptance route for the proposed item. A product family name may cover different years, weights or editions; an old coin, proof finish, collectible packaging or grading slab is not a blanket eligibility decision.

Fineness and governmental exemption are not endorsements of investment quality. The SEC cautions that a self-directed IRA custodian generally does not assess investment merit or legitimacy; a permitted purchase can still be expensive or unsuitable.40

Two Hypothetical Product Checks

An invented gold bar documented at 0.995 meets the cited fineness minimum, but still needs the relevant product/custodian and possession checks. An invented 0.990 gold bullion bar falls below that minimum; branding it “investment grade” does not change the number.64, 51

A coin claiming a statutory exception requires its actual identity and legal route. Do not compare its purity alone with the bullion minimum and then declare the law’s separate exception invalid—or assume every coin with the same broad name qualifies. This worksheet is not a retail recommendation.

Possession Applies Even When an LLC Is Involved

The IRS IRA FAQs state that highly refined bullion must be in physical possession of a bank or IRS-approved nonbank trustee and that the rule also applies when an IRA-owned LLC purchases it. An LLC manager’s home safe is not established as a compliance shortcut.7

The statutory coin clause should not be recast as a universal permission for owners to store IRA assets personally. Obtain qualified legal advice for unusual custody arrangements before purchase; this page makes no case-specific litigation claim or chronology.

Tax Consequences Depend on the Actual Failure

Publication 590-B says an ineligible collectible acquisition is treated as a distribution of the amount invested in the year invested. That differs from an owner/beneficiary prohibited transaction causing the participating account to lose IRA status from the year’s first day. Do not automatically apply the full-account result to every mistaken coin purchase.5, 25

For illustration only, an ineligible collectible purchased with $5,000 IRA money raises the amount-invested distribution issue; it does not by that fact alone prove a separate $100,000 IRA is entirely distributed. The taxable portion, age and additional-tax exception still must be assessed. A later actual delivery should not cause the already-included amount to be taxed twice.5

Buying and Selling Still Need Product-Specific Prices

Eligible does not mean low-premium, guaranteed liquid or buyback at spot. Obtain a purchase quote and a same-time bid for the exact quantity, plus storage/activity charges. This page does not publish fabricated per-metal spread tables or assign palladium a universally inferior investment role.

Retain eligibility approval, invoice, receipt and storage record for later transfer or distribution. A new receiving trustee can require its own acceptance even if the old one accepted the item.

Receiving Metals: Eligibility and Custody Are Separate Checks

For bullion, section 408(m) ties the exception to the contract-market minimum fineness and the physical possession of a bank or IRS-approved nonbank trustee. CME’s contract rules specify gold at 0.995 and silver at 0.999.51, 64, 65 Platinum and palladium each use 0.9995 in their respective contract chapters. The gold minimum is not 0.9995.66, 67

Specifically enumerated coins have a separate statutory exception; fineness alone is not a complete product approval list. Have the receiving custodian confirm the exact product, mint/refiner, denomination and acceptable documentation before an order is placed. The eligible-metals guide explains both statutory routes.51

The IRS IRA FAQs say the trustee-possession requirement for highly refined bullion also applies when an IRA-owned LLC buys it. Forming an LLC does not establish a home-storage safe harbor. Arrange custodian-authorized delivery to the selected storage facility, not personal delivery while claiming the metal remains inside the IRA.7

Keep the trade confirmation, invoice, storage selection, receipt and inventory record together. Those documents establish the chain from IRA cash to the actual product received. Insurance language should be read with the applicable policy and agreement; it is not protection against falling metal prices or proof of a guaranteed resale bid.

Custody Errors and Prohibited Transactions Have Different Consequences

Buying an ineligible collectible can cause the amount invested to be treated as distributed that year. That is not automatically the same as losing the entire IRA’s status. A prohibited transaction by the owner or beneficiary generally causes the participating IRA to cease being an IRA from the first day of that year and be treated as distributed; it does not automatically disqualify every separate IRA the person owns.5, 25

The IRS examples include improper personal use, self-dealing and transactions involving disqualified persons. The precise facts determine whether a transaction is prohibited, what amount is distributed and whether ordinary income or an additional tax results. Do not describe those consequences as a routine custodian fee or promise that a particular company eliminates them.5, 25

Have the custodian’s transaction acceptance in writing, but recognize the SEC’s warning that a self-directed custodian generally does not evaluate investment merit. For unusual related-party, ownership or delivery arrangements, obtain qualified tax/legal analysis before funds move rather than relying on an account structure’s label.40

Save Records for Reporting, Not Just for Tracking the Shipment

An employer-plan direct rollover is still a distribution from the source plan and can generate Form 1099-R even when its taxable amount is zero. The receiving IRA’s Form 5498 can report a rollover contribution. A same-type traditional IRA trustee-to-trustee transfer, with no payment to the owner, generally is not reported as a distribution on Form 1099-R and is not a transfer contribution reported on Form 5498. Annual fair-market-value and RMD-related Form 5498 reporting can still apply.10

Roth conversions, designated Roth plan rollovers and special SIMPLE IRA rules need their own treatment; do not copy one distribution code onto every transaction. Compare the forms with the actual source, destination and taxable basis. Form instructions for 2026 are the authority for that year’s reporting layout.10

Retain the sending statement, payment confirmation, receiving-account receipt, rollover/transfer designation, and any withholding statement. Add Form 8606 history where after-tax IRA basis matters. If the institution’s records do not match the movement you authorized, request an explanation or correction before filing rather than treating a provider’s “tax-free” label as sufficient evidence.

Separate Account Charges From the Metal Quote

The dealer supplies a product quote, the custodian administers the IRA, and the depository holds metal under its agreement. The SEC’s self-directed IRA warning explains that custodians generally do not evaluate an investment’s quality or legitimacy. A custodian accepting a purchase is not an endorsement of its price or suitability.40

Ask for one written worksheet covering setup, custody, selected storage, wires, transactions, sale, transfer, distribution and closure. Specify whether fees are paid from IRA cash or separately, when recurring billing starts, and whether a waiver expires. An undisclosed amount is unknown, not zero. Compare the same product and quantity, with a purchase quote and a same-time executable dealer bid; the bid is not assumed to equal spot.

Our fee definitions and cost arithmetic explain billing and denominators; the dated provider fee comparison distinguishes published schedules, examples and conflicting disclosures. Neither the IRS rollover rules nor a tax-free movement guarantees a cost-free account.

For illustration only, a hypothetical $50 setup, $30 initial wire and $235 annual custody-plus-storage charge total $315 in the first full year and $1,255 over five full years if the schedule stays unchanged. That excludes product-price differences, extra activity, exit charges, taxes and returns. It is not an industry average or any provider’s all-in quote. If the purchase costs $52,500 and the same-day bid is $49,000, the separate $3,500 purchase-to-bid gap is 6.67% of the purchase price, not 7%; the denominator matters.

A useful next step is to obtain the itemized account schedule and exact-product bid before signing an irreversible order. The CFTC/FINRA advisory identifies inflated pricing and pressure tactics as precious-metals red flags; a deadline created by a salesperson is not an IRS deadline.39

If the next step is funding from another retirement account, the Gold IRA rollover guide explains the source-specific movement. That funding process is separate from the asset, tax or distribution question discussed here.
