Physical Gold IRA vs Gold ETF: Same Tax Wrapper & Costs
A physical Gold IRA and a gold ETF are not competing tax wrappers. Physical metals can be held in a traditional or Roth IRA, and eligible ETF shares may also be held in a brokerage IRA. First compare the investments inside the same account type; only then compare either with a taxable brokerage holding.
GLD is used here as a specific example, not as a recommendation or a proxy for every gold fund. Its issuer publishes a 0.40% gross expense ratio, exchange-trading risks and limits on individual redemption. A directly held metal IRA has a different custody and delivery process.33

First Choose Which Question You Are Comparing
| Comparison | What stays constant | What differs |
|---|---|---|
| Physical metal vs GLD in a traditional IRA | Traditional-IRA distribution rules | Product/custody costs, trading and delivery rights |
| Physical metal vs GLD in a Roth IRA | Roth contribution/distribution framework | Investment structure and costs |
| GLD in an IRA vs GLD in a taxable account | Investment product | Contributions, distributions and taxable-account reporting |
| Physical metal IRA vs taxable GLD | Neither asset structure nor tax wrapper | Too many variables for a tax-bracket-only verdict |
Traditional IRA distributions are generally ordinary income to the extent taxable, with basis potentially excluding part. Qualified Roth IRA distributions meet the five-tax-year requirement plus an eligible condition, commonly age 59½. These account rules do not become a flat collectibles tax because the account holds gold.10
Funding also matters. A rollover of pretax retirement dollars is not comparable to a purchase with the same nominal amount of after-tax cash without accounting for that difference. A traditional-to-Roth conversion may create tax; replacing investments in the same IRA does not necessarily do so.11, 10
What You Own and How You Can Exit
GLD’s stated objective is to reflect the price of gold bullion less its expenses. It is backed by gold but the investor owns shares, not an individually selected coin or bar. The issuer states shares are not individually redeemable; creation-unit redemption is a different mechanism.33
A physical-metal IRA involves the exact products, qualified custodian and storage arrangement selected for the account. An in-kind distribution may be available through the custodian, but it removes metal from IRA custody and has its own valuation, tax reporting and delivery process. Delaware and IDS describe IRA movements through custodian authorization.20, 23, 10
Same traditional or Roth IRA wrapper
├─ Physical products → custodian/depository → sale or in-kind instructions
└─ GLD shares → brokerage holding → exchange sale; no individual bar redemption
Neither path eliminates every counterparty, liquidity or operational risk. A vault contract, ETF prospectus and brokerage agreement allocate different responsibilities; the word “physical” does not make those documents unnecessary.
Current Cost Evidence, Without an Invented Twenty-Year Return
| Cost layer | Direct physical-metal IRA | GLD example |
|---|---|---|
| Investment purchase | Exact product quote and premium; request a same-day bid | Exchange price, bid-ask spread and any broker charge |
| Recurring investment/account charges | Selected custody plus storage and insurance | 0.40% gross expense ratio, plus any applicable account/brokerage charge |
| Sale | Dealer’s actual bid plus applicable processing charges | Exchange sale price; spread and broker charges can apply |
| Physical delivery | Custodian/depository procedure and account-specific charges | Ordinary GLD shares are not individually redeemable for gold |
| Tax treatment | Determined by wrapper and distributions | Determined by wrapper; taxable GLD has product-specific grantor-trust reporting |
The GLD column comes from the issuer’s product information, checked October 12, 2026. It explicitly warns about commissions, expenses and market prices above or below net asset value; “no spread” or universally free trading would be incorrect.33
For the physical side, Augusta’s FAQ lists $50 setup, $125 annual custody and $110 storage/insurance, or $285 first year/$235 later. Birch’s named Equity Trust/Delaware example lists $50 setup, $30 wire and the same $235 recurring sum. Those are different disclosed arrangements, not all-inclusive category averages.1, 2
Lear provides storage-dependent totals. Noble’s IRA and support pages disagree. AHG’s reviewed FAQ supplies a minimum and variable-storage description rather than a complete numerical schedule, while Silver Gold Bull’s IRA pages were blocked. The provider fee comparison records those limits, and fee definitions explain billing layers.
Worked Annual-Cost Snapshot: Equal Balances, No Growth Assumption
Using GLD’s disclosed 0.40% ratio, an annualized constant-average-value approximation is $200 at $50,000 and $400 at $100,000. This is not a literal brokerage invoice or a prediction of asset values; the fund incurs expenses through its structure.33
Compare those with Augusta’s disclosed $235 recurring custody/storage subtotal: $235 at either modeled balance if its published flat schedule applies. The simple recurring-charge equality is $235 ÷ 0.004 = $58,750. That is only equality between two incomplete cost components—not a break-even investment amount or proof that direct metal becomes cheaper above it.
The calculation excludes setup, purchase premium, bid-ask differences, broker charges, activity, delivery, taxes, fees changing over time and different price behavior. A real comparison must include those components. A ten-year total cannot be inferred by assuming gold appreciates at a “conservative” rate and calling the resulting year a guaranteed crossover.
Taxable GLD: Specific Grantor-Trust Rules, Not Every ETF
GLD’s 2025 tax-reporting statement, retrieved October 12, 2026, describes GLD as a grantor trust. Shareholders generally are treated as owning a proportionate interest in its underlying assets. It says gains on GLD shares held more than one year generally face a maximum 28% federal collectibles rate, rather than a flat 28% on every investor’s sale.34
The same statement explains gold sales used to meet trust expenses and shareholder basis/reporting calculations. That is more precise than claiming every gold ETF “rebalances and distributes gains annually.” The document is for 2025 tax reporting; use the applicable year’s issuer materials for filing, and do not import its tax-deduction statements into 2026 without current authority.34
Gold futures funds, mining-stock funds and bullion trusts are different structures. This article does not establish their rates, expenses or eligibility. Read the actual prospectus and obtain tax advice for the product you intend to hold.
IRA Tax Treatment and Distribution Planning
Inside a traditional IRA, the investment’s taxable-account collectibles characterization does not replace traditional IRA distribution rules. Original Roth IRA owners do not have lifetime RMDs; traditional IRA owners have applicable required-distribution obligations. An ETF share held in an IRA does not remove those account rules.10, 18
For physical metal, the additional practical question is whether to sell and distribute cash or request in-kind delivery. For GLD, an ordinary shareholder typically sells shares rather than redeeming a chosen bar. Compare the executable exit, not a theoretical spot valuation.33, 20
An inherited IRA also has beneficiary-specific rules. A taxable investment and an inherited IRA should not be reduced to a universal “estate winner”: basis, beneficiary category, account type and required-distribution timing can materially change the outcome.10
A Decision Based on the Job You Need Done
A physical-metal IRA deserves further examination if you specifically want directly held eligible products with a documented custodian and possible in-kind distribution. Require inventory, title, storage, insurance and delivery terms before deciding that ownership form is worth its costs.
An exchange-traded bullion product deserves further examination if you want share-based trading and do not need personal delivery of particular coins/bars. Require the exact fund’s structure, expense ratio, trading costs, IRA eligibility and tax documents.
Neither may fit if you need income from this holding, cannot tolerate gold-price volatility or would become too concentrated. Investor.gov identifies high fees, limited liquidity and complex rules as self-directed IRA risks. No portfolio-size threshold or tax bracket alone settles suitability.13

Frequently Asked Questions
Is GLD’s expense ratio a storage fee paid separately?
The issuer’s 0.40% expense ratio describes the fund’s annual operating expenses, not a separate personal vault invoice. Add applicable broker/account charges separately and do not count the same fund expenses twice.33
Can I request delivery of a bar from my GLD shares?
GLD says shares are not individually redeemable. Its creation-unit rules are not equivalent to a retail IRA owner’s in-kind distribution of selected physical holdings.33
Does a lower future tax bracket prove physical gold wins?
No. Match the tax wrapper and pre-/post-tax funding first, then compare total costs and investment structure. The 28% figure is a maximum for the discussed taxable GLD gains, not a universal tax or a comparison result.34, 10
Are ETF shares guaranteed to track gold exactly?
No. The issuer describes gold-price exposure less expenses and warns about share-price fluctuation and premiums/discounts to net asset value.33
