Gold IRA Storage: Vaults, Agreements & Exit Process
The best Gold IRA storage option is the arrangement your qualified custodian can document, with inventory, insurance, release rights and charges you understand. A vault name or the word “segregated” is not enough. Delaware’s actual FAQ says both segregated and non-segregated bullion are fully allocated, while its IRA accounts are controlled through the trustee/custodian.20
This guide answers the broader vault-selection question: who holds the account, how storage works, what evidence to retain and how to obtain a future release. For the narrower exact-item versus shared-product decision, use segregated versus commingled storage.

Start With the Custodian, Not a List of “Approved Vaults”
The IRS states that certain highly refined bullion qualifies only when physically possessed by a bank or IRS-approved nonbank trustee. It explicitly says the rule also applies when an IRA-owned LLC buys bullion. The statute separately identifies certain qualifying coins. Dealer marketing cannot waive the trustee/custody framework.9, 16
For gold bullion, the statutory reference is to contract-market minimum fineness. The captured CME gold contract rule requires 0.995 fineness; 0.9995 is not the general gold minimum. Eligible coins can qualify under a separate statutory exception, so ask for approval of the actual coin or bar rather than using purity as the only eligibility test.16, 17
You choose the account and authorize investment instructions
↓
Qualified IRA custodian administers the account and reporting
↓
Dealer supplies the approved coin/bar ordered for the account
↓
Depository holds inventory under the custody arrangement
↓
Custodian authorizes sale, transfer or distribution instructions
This is a roles diagram, not a statement that dealers are custodians. Investor.gov warns that self-directed IRA custodians generally do not evaluate investment quality or legitimacy. An accepted account does not validate a dealer’s price, return claims or sales advice.13
Compare the Storage Documents on These Six Dimensions
| Selection dimension | What the documents should answer | A reason to pause |
|---|---|---|
| Legal parties | Custodian, vault entity and location | A brand name without the contracting entity |
| Inventory | Product, quantity, allocation and reconciliation | A dollar balance without a holdings record |
| Physical arrangement | Customer-separated or product-grouped; substitution rights | “Allocated” used as if it always means segregated |
| Insurance | Covered risks, exclusions, valuation and claim route | A coverage headline without policy scope |
| Access and release | Instructions, authorization, inspection and delivery | A dealer promises unrestricted access to IRA assets |
| Charges | Custody versus storage, billing basis and planned activity | A storage number presented as the entire annual bill |
Delaware and IDS supply concrete examples of these differences: Delaware separates IRA from personal-storage instructions; IDS supplies an IRA-only inspection/pickup/delivery procedure requiring trustee/custodian involvement. That is more useful than assuming every vault permits the same visit.20, 23
Segregated, Non-Segregated and Allocated Are Not Synonyms
Delaware describes non-segregated holdings as allocated on its system and physically separated by product. Its segregated arrangement separates by customer and returns the exact deposited material. Both can represent customer metal holdings.20
IDS describes allocated holdings as investor-owned metal under a safekeeping/custody arrangement and separately explains customer-separated storage. That is a different distinction from an unallocated banking claim. Check how your agreement uses these terms instead of importing a definition from another facility.21
If you care about a specific year, refiner or item, put that detail in the purchase and storage records. If interchangeable products are acceptable, document precisely what a substitute can be. Neither choice is automatically correct above or below a particular account balance.
Current Provider Disclosures: What Storage Actually Costs in the Reviewed Arrangements
These are October 12, 2026 published account disclosures, not a universal depository tariff. Each source has a different scope.
| Provider | Storage finding | Other charges and limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Augusta | $110 annual storage/insurance in its standard FAQ | $125 custody; $50 setup; $285 first year/$235 later1 |
| Birch | $110 storage/insurance in its Equity Trust/Delaware example | $125 custody, $50 setup and $30 wire; different arrangements may differ2 |
| Lear | $110 non-segregated or $160 segregated | $125 maintenance, $50 application and $30 wire; lower FAQ total needs electronic statements4, 5 |
| Noble | Gold IRA page lists $160 storage; support lists $150 segregated | Both list $125 custody/maintenance; conflicting disclosures require written resolution7, 8 |
| American Hartford Gold | Says storage varies by account size and holdings | No complete numerical schedule established by the reviewed IRA FAQ6 |
Silver Gold Bull’s official IRA routes were blocked during the review, including browser access. Its storage rate and IRA minimum are not verified, not $0. No non-IRA retail offer is substituted for an IRA agreement.
Use the current provider fee comparison for exclusions and unresolved amounts. Use fee definitions to separate annual custody from storage, product pricing and exit charges.
A Useful Worked Quote Check
Suppose you receive a hypothetical quote with $125 annual custody, $110 storage and one $30 wire. Recurring charges sum to $235; one year with that wire is $265 before any setup or other charges. If the representative calls $235 “storage,” ask whether the label already includes custody. Do not add $125 again and manufacture a $360 recurring bill.
That example is a billing exercise, not a claim about an unnamed custodian or the price of your metals. Record who invoices each charge, whether payment comes from outside cash or IRA cash, and how a shortage of cash is handled. Do not assume selling metal to pay a bill is costless.
Check Insurance Without Turning It Into a Guarantee
Delaware lists physical-loss coverages and exclusions. Its account description identifies customer holdings as customer assets. These are provider representations tied to its arrangements—not an unlimited governmental guarantee or an assurance of immediate recovery from every legal dispute.20
IDS’s corporate agreement contains liability, instruction and insurance provisions. Its corporate fee schedule does not establish a retail IRA price. Request your selected account’s agreement, policy summary and claim procedure; insurance wording cannot establish a universal insolvency priority.22
Ask specifically whether transit to and from the vault is covered, which carrier/instructions must be used, whether limits apply per incident or account, and how valuation works. No insurance policy cited here promises protection against a fall in gold’s value.
Reconcile Receipt, Statements and Release Rights
After a purchase, compare the invoice against the holdings statement: product, weight, quantity and any specified year/refiner. Ask the custodian to investigate discrepancies in writing. If the statement gives an estimated metal value, do not assume it is an executable dealer bid.
Delaware says IRA reports and instructions are exchanged through the custodian. IDS allows IRA inspections under its appointment procedure but requires custodian authorization. Inspection, sale and personal delivery are different instructions; an inspection is not a distribution.20, 23
Before a future cash need, obtain the custodian’s forms and the dealer’s current bid. Clarify whether proceeds will stay in the IRA, move to another custodian or be paid to you. IRA distribution taxation depends on account type, basis and exceptions; a release to you is not the same as a vault-to-vault custody move.10, 11
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a home safe instead?
The IRS bullion exception requires qualified trustee possession, including indirect LLC acquisitions. The Tax Court’s November 18, 2021 McNulty opinion also rejected personal possession of American Eagle coins through an IRA-owned LLC. Read the home-storage answer rather than assume the coin exception solves the problem.9, 36
Does a storage violation always tax the entire account?
No single consequence covers every fact pattern. An ineligible collectible purchase generally treats the amount invested as distributed. An owner/beneficiary prohibited transaction generally causes the affected IRA to cease being an IRA from the start of that year. Taxable basis, account type and additional-tax exceptions still matter.10, 14
Which vault location is best?
The reviewed material does not establish a safest city or a geography-based return advantage. Confirm the custodian permits the location and compare the contract, logistics, records, insurance and cost. Do not import personal-storage foreign-vault options into an IRA without confirmation.
What should I have before funding?
The signed account and storage terms, a complete fee schedule, exact product confirmation, insurance scope, statement access and release instructions. The precious-metals IRA overview connects those records to the full account decision.
