Gold IRA Tax Rules: Basis, Roth and Withdrawal Types
Gold inside a compliant IRA follows the account’s tax rules, not a special 28% IRA collectibles rate. Traditional distributions are generally ordinary income to the extent taxable after basis/exclusions; qualified Roth IRA distributions are tax-free. Contribution eligibility, asset eligibility and withdrawal treatment are different tests.5, 30

The Tax Event Table
| Action | General federal treatment | Records needed |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary traditional IRA contribution | Deductibility depends on eligibility and limits | Compensation, plan coverage, MAGI and receipt |
| Ordinary Roth contribution | Nondeductible; direct-contribution income eligibility applies | MAGI, year and combined IRA contributions |
| Eligible same-type transfer/rollover | Generally preserves tax deferral under its rules | Source/destination and receipt classification |
| Pre-tax assets moved to Roth | Taxable conversion portion included in income | Basis history and Form 8606 calculation |
| Sale of accepted metal inside IRA; cash stays inside | Different from owner distribution | Trade and account records |
| Traditional cash or in-kind distribution | Ordinary income to extent taxable | Valuation, basis and distribution form |
| Qualified Roth IRA distribution | Tax-free under qualified-distribution conditions | Roth five-year and qualifying-event evidence |
| Nonqualified Roth distribution | Ordering and conversion clocks matter | Contributions/conversions/earnings history |
Publication 590-A covers funding rules; Publication 590-B covers distributions and Roth ordering. Their 2025 editions must not supply older annual figures when a 2026 amount is needed; use Notice 2025-67 for the 2026 dollar limits.6, 5, 50
Traditional Basis: Not Every Dollar Is Taxable
Nondeductible contributions and eligible after-tax rollover amounts can establish basis. Form 8606 generally aggregates the person’s relevant traditional IRA balances, not only the metals account. A separate custodian does not automatically let the owner withdraw “only basis” first.5
For a simplified hypothetical calculation, assume a $100,000 applicable aggregate denominator and $10,000 basis, with no other complications. A $10,000 distribution has a 10% nontaxable share, or $1,000, leaving $9,000 taxable. The denominator in a real calculation reflects the applicable year-end and distribution/conversion rules; this model is not a substitute for the form instructions.5
At an invented fixed 24% incremental rate, $9,000 produces $2,160 income tax. If an early-distribution additional tax applies to that taxable amount, 10% adds $900, not $1,000 on the entire distribution. Basis and exceptions therefore belong in the model before totals are calculated.5, 11
Roth Qualification Versus Roth Ordering
A qualified Roth IRA distribution needs the five-tax-year requirement and an eligible event, such as age 59½, disability, death-beneficiary payment or qualifying first-home costs within the lifetime limit. “Roth” on the account title alone is not evidence every withdrawal is qualified.5
If nonqualified, ordering generally distributes regular contributions first, then conversions/rollovers and then earnings. Conversion additional-tax clocks are separate from the qualification clock. An earnings-only penalty description misses possible conversion-related additional tax; a claim that every nonqualified dollar is taxable misses contribution ordering.
Collectibles Capital Gains Outside the IRA
The IRS capital-gains topic describes a maximum 28% rate on long-term collectible gains. It is not a flat 28% tax on gross sale proceeds or every gold gain. Short-term gains and other tax factors differ.30
Inside the IRA, a compliant asset’s appreciation is not annually taxed to the owner as personal collectible capital gain. At a traditional distribution, the taxable portion follows ordinary-income treatment; at a qualified Roth distribution, the Roth rule applies. Comparing those outcomes requires equal pre-tax or after-tax starting wealth and complete costs, not a “Roth wins” table that ignores contribution/conversion taxes.5
Contribution, SEP and QCD Figures for 2026
The ordinary IRA cap is $7,500, or $8,600 with the $1,100 age-50 catch-up, subject to eligibility. SEP’s 2026 employer dollar maximum is $72,000, with percentage/compensation rules and a special self-employed calculation. These are not rollover caps.1, 59
The 2026 QCD income-exclusion cap is $111,000. Age 70½, direct charitable payment, recipient eligibility, substantiation and deductible-contribution offsets can matter. Use the annual limits guide for the exact year’s table rather than importing a 2024 or 2025 number.5, 50
Custody Consequence Is Not One Universal Penalty
An ineligible collectible acquisition can cause the amount invested to be treated as distributed. An owner/beneficiary prohibited transaction can cause the participating IRA to lose status as of the year’s first day. Pledging assets has its own scope; other disqualified persons’ excise taxes are not automatically stacked on the owner. Identify the actual transaction before naming a tax base.5, 25
The early-withdrawal guide addresses exceptions and ordering; the eligible-metals guide addresses products and possession. Neither can be replaced by a dealer’s “IRS-approved” badge.

Record each action separately with its date, amount and supporting document. Preserve basis and Roth history even when a new custodian does not request every prior return. For state tax, obtain year-specific treatment; the federal framework is not a full state-law survey.
RMD Planning Depends on Birth Year and Account Type
Original-owner traditional IRA RMDs apply to the confirmed 1951–1958 birth-year bracket starting in the year the owner turns 73, and to those born in 1960 or later starting at 75. The current regulation leaves the 1959 bracket reserved; a proposed age-73 treatment is not presented here as a final rule. Original Roth IRA owners have no lifetime RMDs.26, 74
Someone born in 1955 will turn 73 in 2028, which is still future as of October 2026. Their first 2028 IRA RMD may be delayed until April 1, 2029; a separate 2029 RMD would then be due December 31, 2029. Delaying the first payment can put two RMDs into one calendar tax year.26, 74
The calculation uses the prior December 31 account value divided by the applicable life-expectancy factor. The Uniform Lifetime Table is not always the correct table; a sole spouse beneficiary more than ten years younger can require the joint-life table. Calculate each applicable IRA’s RMD separately, then determine whether permitted IRA aggregation lets the withdrawal come from another IRA. Do not mix 401(k) balances into that IRA calculation.5, 26
Cash after a sale and an authorized in-kind metal distribution are different operating paths. Document valuation and the amount credited toward the requirement; a dealer’s bid and the account’s reported fair market value need not be identical. See the RMD calculation guide and distribution instructions before requesting delivery. RMD amounts are not eligible for rollover.5, 26
Save Records for Reporting, Not Just for Tracking the Shipment
An employer-plan direct rollover is still a distribution from the source plan and can generate Form 1099-R even when its taxable amount is zero. The receiving IRA’s Form 5498 can report a rollover contribution. A same-type traditional IRA trustee-to-trustee transfer, with no payment to the owner, generally is not reported as a distribution on Form 1099-R and is not a transfer contribution reported on Form 5498. Annual fair-market-value and RMD-related Form 5498 reporting can still apply.10
Roth conversions, designated Roth plan rollovers and special SIMPLE IRA rules need their own treatment; do not copy one distribution code onto every transaction. Compare the forms with the actual source, destination and taxable basis. Form instructions for 2026 are the authority for that year’s reporting layout.10
Retain the sending statement, payment confirmation, receiving-account receipt, rollover/transfer designation, and any withholding statement. Add Form 8606 history where after-tax IRA basis matters. If the institution’s records do not match the movement you authorized, request an explanation or correction before filing rather than treating a provider’s “tax-free” label as sufficient evidence.
Separate Account Charges From the Metal Quote
The dealer supplies a product quote, the custodian administers the IRA, and the depository holds metal under its agreement. The SEC’s self-directed IRA warning explains that custodians generally do not evaluate an investment’s quality or legitimacy. A custodian accepting a purchase is not an endorsement of its price or suitability.40
Ask for one written worksheet covering setup, custody, selected storage, wires, transactions, sale, transfer, distribution and closure. Specify whether fees are paid from IRA cash or separately, when recurring billing starts, and whether a waiver expires. An undisclosed amount is unknown, not zero. Compare the same product and quantity, with a purchase quote and a same-time executable dealer bid; the bid is not assumed to equal spot.
Our fee definitions and cost arithmetic explain billing and denominators; the dated provider fee comparison distinguishes published schedules, examples and conflicting disclosures. Neither the IRS rollover rules nor a tax-free movement guarantees a cost-free account.
For illustration only, a hypothetical $50 setup, $30 initial wire and $235 annual custody-plus-storage charge total $315 in the first full year and $1,255 over five full years if the schedule stays unchanged. That excludes product-price differences, extra activity, exit charges, taxes and returns. It is not an industry average or any provider’s all-in quote. If the purchase costs $52,500 and the same-day bid is $49,000, the separate $3,500 purchase-to-bid gap is 6.67% of the purchase price, not 7%; the denominator matters.
A useful next step is to obtain the itemized account schedule and exact-product bid before signing an irreversible order. The CFTC/FINRA advisory identifies inflated pricing and pressure tactics as precious-metals red flags; a deadline created by a salesperson is not an IRS deadline.39
If the next step is funding from another retirement account, the Gold IRA rollover guide explains the source-specific movement. That funding process is separate from the asset, tax or distribution question discussed here.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is traditional IRA gold taxed at no more than 28% on withdrawal?
No. The taxable traditional IRA distribution generally follows ordinary-income rules, with basis/exclusions. The collectibles capital-gains maximum is a different outside-IRA rule.IRS Publication 590-B (2025), IRS Topic 409: capital gains and losses
Does every traditional IRA withdrawal have a 10% additional tax?
No. Age, taxable amount and specific exceptions matter. The additional tax is different from ordinary income tax.IRS Publication 590-B (2025), IRS early-distribution exception chart
Can a nonqualified Roth withdrawal still contain tax-free money?
Yes. Roth ordering rules generally put regular contributions first, then conversions/rollovers and earnings, with separate conversion additional-tax rules.IRS Publication 590-B (2025)
