Gold IRA Buyback Policies: Six Providers’ Actual Terms
A buyback program is not automatically a guarantee of repurchase, price or settlement time. Current first-party documents show meaningful differences: AHG promises no additional liquidation fee but declines guaranteed repurchase; Lear describes a wholesale-bid process; Augusta describes a product-specific quote and a limited cancellation window; Birch welcomes a quote request; Noble describes cash or physical-delivery options. Silver Gold Bull’s relevant pages were inaccessible in this review.25, 29, 1
Compare the actual bid and custody instructions before selling. Spot value, a custodian statement, an oral valuation and an executable product-specific offer answer different questions.

Six-Provider Policy Comparison, Checked October 12, 2026
| Provider | Current document finding | Distinct buyer question |
|---|---|---|
| Augusta | FAQ describes a recorded current-price quote and a 24-hour window to request cancellation if another dealer offers more; no guaranteed repurchase, no separate liquidation fee when it agrees1 | What triggers that window, what comparison evidence is required, and when does the order bind? |
| American Hartford Gold | Commitment gives call/shipment/payment sequence and no additional liquidation fee; agreement declines guaranteed repurchase or price25, 26 | What product bid, shipment acceptance/risk and payment conditions apply? |
| Lear | Agreement declines guarantee; describes wholesaler’s highest list bid and no added purchase-side spread on its own-origin buybacks29 | What is the executable wholesale-based bid after any other deductions? |
| Birch | FAQ welcomes the opportunity to repurchase metals sold to customers; pricing depends on specific products, demand and availability3 | Will it quote my exact holdings and what conditions bind the offer? |
| Noble | Support describes contacting its IRA expert for cash or physical delivery and a buyback program8 | What signed terms govern availability, price, custodian authorization and timing? |
| Silver Gold Bull | Official IRA and sell-to-us access blocked by security challenges | Obtain the applicable IRA/sale policy; retail conditions cannot be assumed to apply |
No fixed percentage below spot, “lifetime guarantee” or standard settlement-day count is assigned to these six companies. Missing terms remain unknown, not zero. Provider statements that law limits guarantees are reported as their policy wording, not independently asserted as a universal legal rule.
Augusta: A Detailed Process, Not a Guaranteed Price Floor
Augusta’s current FAQ says the process begins with an oral valuation appointment, followed by live buyback pricing confirmed on a recorded call if the customer proceeds. It describes a 24-hour highest-price cancellation window, then a purchase order, Equity Trust authorization, depository transfer and payment. The FAQ gives a provider-described typical period of about three weeks depending on custodian/depository processing; that is not a binding all-account deadline.1
It also says no separate liquidation fee applies when Augusta agrees to repurchase and explicitly does not guarantee future repurchase. An attractive process description does not tell you how the bid compares with an independent buyer today. Request the exact conditions and current order terms rather than relying on a historical no-decline claim.1
AHG: Dealer Fee Commitment, Price and Shipment Still Matter
AHG’s commitment says it does not add liquidation fees and describes contacting it to start the process. Its transaction agreement says an offer can change with inventory needs, market conditions and similar-metal availability. The same agreement addresses when AHG assumes shipment risk.25, 26
There is no verified universal AHG “spot minus 2–4%” bid or completion window here. Our AHG buyback guide covers its actual sequence and the custodian’s separate distribution instructions.
Lear: “No Added Spread” Is Not “Bid Equals Ask”
Lear defines its purchase spread relative to its acquisition cost and quoted retail purchase price. It says it does not add that purchase-side spread to buybacks of products originally bought from Lear, but the wholesaler’s bid is below the wholesaler’s ask. Therefore, the original purchase premium and wholesale bid/ask gap can remain even without an added dealer buyback spread.29
Ask for the current net bid, which holdings qualify and what account or delivery charges are outside it. A provider’s historical claim that it has not refused a customer opportunity does not make tomorrow’s quote legally or economically guaranteed. The Lear review also discusses pricing disclosure and historical regulatory context.
Birch and Noble: Published Paths With Product-Specific Unknowns
Birch’s current FAQ explains that metal-content spot value can differ materially from a product’s current liquidation value. It welcomes the opportunity to buy back metals it sold and recommends a specific holdings quote based on factors such as product, mint, size, availability and demand. That supports a product-specific process, not a standard spread percentage or guaranteed bid.3
Noble’s support says to contact its IRA expert for distribution/liquidation and describes cash versus physical delivery. The reviewed answer does not establish a fixed spread or binding payment deadline. Its positive marketing language is not evidence of guaranteed profits.8
In both cases, ask the custodian who authorizes release and where funds go. For Noble’s account-cost context, its IRA and support pages conflict on annual storage. Our provider fee comparison keeps both disclosures visible rather than substitute one universal charge.
Net Bid Worksheet: Price, Deductions and Payment Are Separate
| Record | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Exact holdings | A quote for a different coin/bar is not comparable |
| Firm/indicative bid and expiration | A valuation is not necessarily an executable trade |
| Price-lock/inspection conditions | Shows what may change the amount |
| Embedded versus additional deductions | Prevents double-counting |
| Shipment carrier, authorization and risk | Determines who bears loss before acceptance |
| Payment destination and completion | Distinguishes IRA settlement from owner distribution |
| Chosen account instruction | Cash retained, transfer, cash distribution or in-kind delivery |
CFTC recommends written fees and comparison of precious-metal costs. Save both the bid and the signed instructions, and clarify what happens if a quote expires while custody paperwork is pending.12
Hypothetical illustration: buyer A bids $40,000 with $100 in separate costs; buyer B bids $39,950 with $20 separate costs. Net amounts are $39,900 and $39,930. B is $30 higher after those assumed charges. This does not assign either cost structure to a named provider, and it does not forecast future pricing.
Selling an Investment Is Not Necessarily Distributing the IRA
Metal sold under custodian instructions → cash posted within IRA
├─ remain invested/cash inside IRA
├─ eligible trustee transfer
└─ separately instructed distribution to owner
A metal sale with proceeds retained within the IRA is different from paying those proceeds to you. An in-kind distribution is another route: the metal leaves IRA custody without being sold first. Traditional basis, qualified Roth treatment, age-related additional-tax exceptions and required-distribution rules depend on the account and person.10
A traditional-to-Roth conversion is not automatically tax-free merely because funds move directly. An RMD is not eligible for rollover. Keep the tax instruction separate from the dealer’s purchase order.11, 10
Operational Timing Without Invented Industry Averages
Ask the actual parties for quote expiry, release authorization, inspection/acceptance, payment initiation, cash posting and distribution completion dates. Delaware says IRA shipment instructions go through the custodian; IDS’s IRA appointment procedure requires custodian authorization. Those facility-specific documents show why a simple dealer callback is not the whole process.20, 23
A processing delay does not prove the dealer is timing the market against you. Compare the price-lock terms and written status; do not replace missing evidence with accusations. For an RMD, ask the custodian how completion is documented before the applicable deadline.18
For broader definitions, use fee mechanics and the precious-metals IRA overview. They explain why a dealer’s no-fee promise cannot establish the entire account’s exit cost.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is any reviewed policy a guarantee I will get my purchase price back?
No. Current bids depend on products and market conditions; several documents explicitly decline guaranteed repurchase. A narrow cancellation window is not a principal guarantee.1, 26, 29
Must every bid be below spot?
No such universal rule is established. Product-specific bids can differ from metal-content value. Compare actual offers rather than use a predetermined haircut.3, 1
Can I ask another buyer for a bid?
Ask the custodian what third-party procedure is permitted. Augusta’s FAQ explicitly says the customer need not sell back to it; other accounts’ acceptance and charges need their own documents.1
What should I verify before authorizing shipment?
The executable bid, accepted products, conditions, insurer/carrier responsibilities, custodian authorization and destination of proceeds. Do not send IRA assets into your personal custody as an informal shortcut.9
